Tips To Cool Down Your Small Server Rooms

Without a dedicated data center or server room, it can be hard to control the humidity and temperature in the area. During the summer season, the temperature in small server rooms can be hard to maintain because of heat waves. Having the proper equipment and the ability to monitor and control the room temperature are some of the most important factors that businesses should consider when it comes to keeping their servers cool.

Heat Containment and Server Room Size

All electronic devices, including servers, will eventually generate heat. The higher the processing power of a CPU or a particular piece of equipment, the more heat it can generate. A cooling facility is built into the hardware design of servers and computers. These include variable speed fans and a heat sink. The air coming out of the exhaust pipes is then drawn through the front and rear of the case, passing over the CPU and the cooling fins. This process results in a temperature difference between the air coming out of the exhaust and the air coming in through the rear.

A heat containment system is typically installed in a data center to prevent the cold air from escaping the cooling system and mixing with the hot exhaust air coming from the rear racks. This type of system improves energy efficiency and cooling.

Unfortunately, containment systems are not ideal for small server rooms, which typically have only one or two racks. This type of solution will not allow businesses to fit within budget and room size restrictions.

Portable Air Conditioners

Although portable air conditioners are useful for short-term cooling needs, they should not be considered a permanent solution. These units can be installed regularly and can supplement an existing air conditioner to provide a short-term solution. Server room cooling units are perfect to use during the summer months when temperatures are harder to control.

Air-Conditioned Server Racks

An air-cooled server rack is an alternative to portable AC units. This type of cabinet can be equipped with either a built-in or bolt-on air conditioner. Although this type of solution can cool the servers inside the rack, the heat still needs to be exhausted through either external or internal pipes or tubing. Air-cooled servers can be ideal for harsh environments.

Permanently-Installed Cooling Systems

Wall-mounted air conditioners are ideal for small server rooms. This type of solution can be connected to an external condenser unit through a pipe. The header unit can then be installed on top of the air conditioner. A remote-control panel can be used to set the ambient temperature.

The air conditioner can be equipped with a built-in interface to monitor its condition through a network management protocol. Wall-mounted air conditioners are ideal for small server rooms. They can be placed above the rear rack of the equipment, and the cool air flows over the top of the rack and drops to the front. The warm air coming from the rear of the rack is then drawn into the air conditioner’s intake area.

Controlling Temperatures in Small Server Rooms

The control unit for air conditioning is responsible for setting the ambient temperature of the air that’s flowing into and out of the room. This level of control can be determined by the energy consumption and the hard work required by the air conditioner.

A small server room or storage area may have been created as a result of partitioning in an office area. The control unit for air conditioning is also responsible for setting the room’s ambient temperature.

One of the first things that a survey should look into when it comes to assessing the condition of a small server room is the seal around the door. Besides the door, the condition of the windows should be determined. These can be opened to allow natural light into the room, but they can also contribute to solar gain. To prevent this issue, the windows should be covered with reflective materials and secured internally using bricks, mortar, and bars.

Final Thoughts

It’s relatively simple to monitor and control the temperatures in a small server room. The methods are similar to those used in large data centers but without huge price tags. Portable cooling systems and air conditioners are affordable and energy-efficient options.
